Devon Rat Breeders

Welcome to the Redwall Rattery website.
We are based in Exeter in beautiful Devon and breed for the varieties of fancy rat known as Variegated, Berkshire and aiming towards Badger. We expect a range of beautiful colours in our litters which are born throughout the year!

Rats really are the most fabulous pets, and are brilliant companions. Their intelligent and curious nature as well as their very obvious affection for their owners burrows into the hearts of new rat owners every day. We breed primarily towards good health and temperement, but we also breed for type, marking and colour for showing.

Redwall was founded in 2006 but I have been keeping rats and discovering more about their intelligence and charm every single day since my first rats arrived back in 1998.
The name Redwall has not yet recieved Stud status, but until then is used to recognise us, what we do, and the wonderful rats we breed.

We welcome you to our website, and invite you to read about what we do, meet our rats, and contact us for a chat about becoming a rat owner!

Will you be Dereks new owner?

Derek who came to us as a kitten last Autumn is leading a troubled life in a scary place in his mind.
Since he was very young he was been extremely scatty, and so came to live with me for therepy and to find him a home.
Since then we have been working with Derek to trial him with other bucks and different environments. Thus far, we've found that poor Derek really doesn't do well with life. He seems to be neither frightened nor confident with other rats or people near his cage. We tried many avenues with a variety of aged bucks and different cages for different periods of time but to no avail, even if the other rats were as friendly as could be, he simply gets incredibly defensive and allows only the weakest and least threatening rat [like my own Zero] near him for a moment.

He certainly seems more content living alone, and enjoys free roaming time as long as no human in interfereing, but should be free roamed away from other rats, as he attacks their cages despite any other distractions. He loves toys, and has a very expressive playful mood with them which is fulfilling to watch. But he is difficult to approach to handle him without stressing him out to an extreme state. However, once you have grasped him to your body, he will happily sit on your shoulder or chill out on your lap for a while.

To fulfill his life he really does need more attention than i can commit to him for his life, and could do with an owner with fewer rats and a lot of patience to give this chap a perfect home. With the stress puts on himself he does seem to suffer with skin issues, which i treat with ivermectin. I hope this will clear up perminantly as he settles into a new home.
